Rosy lighting fills the wide-open lounge at the Gershwin, a hotel long known for its youthful clientele of European backpackers and artists. The inviting space has an ideal set-up for groups: rows of low-to-the-ground orange vinyl couches and banquet tables, and flocked red velvet seating wrapped along the walls. On slow weeknights, fashionable, low-key guests tend to gather at the separate bar, which is decorated with luminous fragments of marbled glass. DJs spin Latin music on Wednesday nights and a catch-all mix from Thursdays to Saturdays. Other evenings the house selections--such as Le Tigre remixes and Electric Six tracks--are edgy and seductive enough to keep the party rolling. For extra enticement, try the bartender's delicious French martini, which is fragrant with pineapple, yet has a subtle, not-too-sweet finish.
