The vibe is not so much redneck as loud and post-collegiate, with an emphasis on reliving days probably best forgotten. The overwhelmingly white, straight, male crowd is undoubtedly drawn to the $1.25 mugs of beer (surely the cheapest swill in town). On a weekend night, you'll hardly see anybody past their late 20s. During the day, older local men rule the roost. Ladies brave enough to enter quickly smell the scent of desperate testosterone on the prowl--a fact not lost on the female barkeeps.

My first and only visit to NYC for three days in January included a stop at The Village Idiot. I was trippin' around the Village with my son and another and we stumbled upon the place. Fun time on a week night. Week ends got a little crowded and thanks to the Coyote Ugly attitude of the female barkeeps it was a good time. Rating: [8/10]
