A li ltoo pricey but overall had a great time with the girls after hanging out at some bars in the meat packing district. Lots of bottles lead to a killer night.

Before midnight, Lotus masquerades as an upscale Asian-fusion restaurant and swanky bar. Softly lit banquettes sit perched a tier above the lushly decorated main bar and dining area. A deep-house DJ entertains the diners, who slowly morph into bottle-service junkies and trek to the upstairs lounge or downstairs club. Scantily dressed women, burly athletic types and groups of giggly friends who want a piece of the club's fabled exclusivity wander throughout the caramel- and chocolate-hued space. Decent food, but the worst service I've ever had. What began as the kick-off to my 30th birthday celebration turned into a nightmare when the bill came. The problem was not that I and the 7 other black and latino female lawyers with whom I dined could not afford the $400 check, but that we paid with cash. We gave our server (Kevin) enough cash and a credit card to cover the bill and a generous tip. He returned to our table moments later saying that we would need to help him decide how to split the bill and quickly left. Unfortunately, Kevin failed to return the majority of the case we gave him, then, after being confronted about the missing cash, first denied everything, but later hesitantly produced the exact amount of the cash in question from his back pocket claiming he had "forgotten" it. In the end, the manager offered only to forgive us the $60 automatic gratuity as compensation for our victimization and embarrassment.
